Kanaval
We celebrate carnival in Haiti. This year from February 20th to the 22nd, the whole country is going to be participating in the 3-night national festivities that we call Kanaval. To help with the decentralization program, the government decided that the main carnival will happen in Aux Cayes this year. All the towns and cities will have their own celebrations but the main one that usually takes place in the capital will take place in Aux Cayes. All the music bands have come out with carnival songs that are more upbeat and danceable than usual. One of my favorite is by Vwadezil, it has a catchy rhythm and extremely clever lyrics. And then there’s also Mika Ben’s high energy tune “Tigidip”. Yesterday, my friends and I were singing old carnival songs from when we were pre-teens. It’s funny how these feelings stay with you. No matter what you are now, the happy feelings you got the first time you listened to a King Posse carnival come back listening to them years later. I doubt I will be participating in the Kanaval festivities this year, hopefully I’ll be able to use these holidays to do more local tourism :-)
